I am looking back. I've had a very full 2016.
I released my second album of original music, What Do You Believe?. I curated, hosted, and made podcasts of 5 Cover to Cover shows. The youth and community of the Old Town School of Folk Music learned and played and performed my song We Will Sing in hundred-voice harmony. I co-taught a kids songwriting camp at the Perfect 5th in Harrisburg, PA, worked with 8 classes of kids at Sawyer Elementary school, instructed 32 private students at OTSFM, and had hundreds of students in my Young Voices and Wiggleworms classes. I went to four weddings and a funeral. I traveled by foot, bike, car, train, plane, motorboat, and kayak. I ate delicious food at tons of restaurants. I held an alligator and rode a roller coaster and went roller skating and got to be a ghostbuster.
I performed on my own for adults and for children; I played duo gigs with Mike Allemana, Jesse Weinberg, Heather Perry, Nick Davio, and Charlie Malave; I played in bands with Lindsay and the Lights Go Out, Come Sunday, John Mead's Coyotes, Congress of Starlings, Mr. & Mrs. Wednesday Night, Celine Neon, the Spooky Singalong, Great Moments in Vinyl presents Regina Spektor, Little Queens presents the Eagles.
I performed publicly at Wauwatosa Presbyterian Church, the Hideout, Angelo's, Let Them Eat Chocolate, Riverwest Public House, Wishbone, Simon's, Reggie's, the Old Town School of Folk Music (Szold Hall, Maurer Hall, 909 concert hall), Lincoln Hall, Switch on Summer festival at Buckingham Fountain, Silvie's, the DCtorium, Square Roots festival, Makespace, Martyrs, Millennium Park, Apple Fest, the Smart Museum, Northbrook Library, Ravinia Kidslawn, Schubas, Cafe Mustache.
I traveled from Chicago to have adventures with friends and family in Wautoma, Milwaukee, Racine, Los Angeles, San Diego, Door County, Twin Cities, Harrisburg, NYC, Oakland, and Pittsburgh. I camped a few nights in Joshua Tree with Ben. We backpacked for 6 days through Desolation Wilderness with Molly and Matt. I biked 150 miles from Milwaukee to Whitewater to Madison with the Chain Gang.
Our house hosted Adam's going away party, dinner parties for my mom's birthday and Ben's sister's birthday, a high school friend reunion, and a tearful election night gathering. Ben, Adeline, and I welcomed temporary roommates when Dan moved to Chicago and when Adam moved back. We hosted countless out of town guests.
It is hard to believe how much this year has held and how many friends, family members, students, and audiences I have connected with. The giving and receiving of love is a regular part of my life, my career, my family, my friendships. I am healthy and my needs are more than met. I am lucky, and I am grateful. I resolve to make 2017 another year of exploring, reaching in and reaching out, giving what I have, bringing new things and ideas to life, experiencing beauty, and connecting deeply.
