Nobody Told the Grass Nobody told the grass to stay inside / No one explained it’s safer to stay hidden away / So it came right out and reached up to the sky / Not even aware of rules it dared others to break / I find myself suspicious of the green / So vibrant and inviting when we all should be in hiding / This patch of earth was empty yesterday / Look at it now, packed as a crowd, blade against blade / I’m afraid / Will my inhale be infected by the lilac and the rose? / Every exhale sighing my desire just to get up and go / Spring fever: there’s no medicine to take / Just wait for it to go away / Nobody told the buds to stay inside / And they can be seen emerging from the tips of the trees / Nobody told the daffodil to shelter in the bulb / To put a mask over the tulips and the dewy breath of mud / Because my inhale gets infected by the lilac and the rose / Every exhale sighing my desire just to get up and go / Spring fever: there’s no medicine to take / Just wait for it to go away / And hope and pray / Has anyone told the grizzly bear to stay inside the cave this year? / ‘Cause nobody told the magnolia that her blossoms shouldn’t sprout / The butterflies and bees affirm, the robin tugging at the worm / Nature’s calling-- “Everybody out!” / It’s contagious / There’s no doubt / My inhale is infected by the lilac and the rose / Every exhale sighing my desire but there’s nowhere to go / Feeling feverish / Nothing I can take / Just wait / Hope this goes away
Time and Place I’m always losing track of time / Something he doesn’t understand / He said, “Do you ever lose track of gravity?” / What am I supposed to say to that? / When I am saddled down by details / Wishing that my dreams would take me higher / But my dreams are always losing track of time / Showing shadows I was sure had been retired / There’s a time and a place / Just a second, save a space / Both are waiting to be filled / If I don’t decide to do it, something will / I’m always taking up the lead / Even when I’m not sure how to go / I turn the key and pull out into traffic / I’ll find my direction on the road / I’ve got the drive to keep it moving / Wish I knew what I was driven toward / Certain where I’ve been and what’s around me / Can’t remember where I’ve never been before / There’s a time and a place / Wait a second, make some space / Both are ready to be filled / If we don’t decide to do it, something will / Be wise with how you spend your days / Ask why you wanted it this way / How high a price will you have paid / When you discover you are at the finish line? / How much longer left to go? Discoverers Won’t you wrap your arms around me and carry us away? / Will you flip the switch and turn off all the world? / In that darkness we are happy with the strangeness of the shapes / Every echo and involuntary curl / Let’s go deeper, even deeper, let’s see who comes out to play / Let’s explore some more the true we always knew / So we disappear together leaving beauty in our place / A relic for a future me and you / Discoverers just finding they are new
