In the Middle triptych: part 1

I Heard From the Rain I heard from the rain / Who’s doing well, by the way / But we both miss you / I called up that song / Always get the middle wrong / And we both miss you / But I’m sure the rain has fallen on you since that day / And that song I know for certain is a tune you always play / So who did they see? / Who’s the you who’s not with me? / I’ll never know / I searched out the words / They were flighty as the birds / And we both miss you / Checked in with desire / She has never been a liar / And we both miss you / Now I’m sure that you are using words to talk and write and read / And you must feel desire for your every want and need / So who do they see? / Who’s the you who’s not with me? / I’ll never know / I heard from you / It made me wonder who I knew / I’ll never know

Cicada Song  The grating cicadas are screaming the end of the season / They’re almost as graceless as I am when letting things go / Another sweet summer has started to fade / The heat of the nights and the cool in the shade / My skin tried its hardest to soak up a year’s worth of glow / But it’s cold / Ripening with every passing day / Can’t restrain what’s predisposed to change / My arms raise and reach for the sky as if I could hold on to it / Although it is visible, nothing is actually there / The gutters are suddenly filling with leaves / The floods never care if they’re getting release / The breezes are thrilling but hinder the skin we can bare / We don’t dare / Ripening with every passing day / Can’t restrain what’s predisposed to change / The grating cicadas are screaming the end of the season / They’re almost as graceless as I am when trying to let go

In The Middle I'm forever haunted by the memories of what there used to be / And even when no one is singing it, within my ear I hear that harmony / The seedlings that we nurtured and our hopes that they would grow into a tree / Who pruned the leaves? / What weeds are these? / Where will my care be received? / Standing by your side, hearts full of pride, we recognize majority / Dancing, smiling, singing, stomping, sinking, sobbing, squeezing you to me / The seasons seem familiar, but the changes still remain a mystery / Who tuned these strings? / What forms repeat? / Which line am I supposed to sing? And why do we cry when we find a memory? / While we’re grateful for the good stuff we’ve got going on / It’s a surprise to realize that when it’s gone, it’s gone / Every beginning has an end / In the middle, I’m with you, my friend / Why do we cry when we find a memory? / While we’re grateful for the good stuff we’ve got going on / We’re still surprised to realize that when it’s gone, it’s gone / Every beginning has an end / In the middle, I’m with you, my friend

Souvenir  Here, a souvenir / I sliced off this piece of my heart / It’s okay, have no fear / It won’t hurt me until we are far apart / Take care not to drip on your shoe / I swear it will stop bleeding soon / I have done this before / They always do / I will spend the summer remembering  / How you fit in my arms on the dance floor / I will spend evenings imagining / How your head used to rest on the kitchen door / And I’ll cry / And I’ll deal / And I’ll try / And I’ll heal / I have done this before / I know how it feels / Pieces of me scattered all over the globe / Each one a stake through the edge of my thinly stretched soul / Brooklyn to Oakland to Austin to Portland / Seattle, Harrisburg, St. Paul / I am here, in the heartland / Keeping the beat through it all / Together we’re singing the song that is bringing our souls to the surface / Together, for right or for wrong, we unearth the unknowns that unnerve us / It’s too soon to fly, and it’s too late to drive / And the last time I saw you, we both were alive / But the magic is much more than just saying hi / And you can’t make it happen alone / We have done this before / Come here / I’ll pull you in near / Together

Goldie They call her Goldie / She is a being of light / Her joy is like a beacon reaching searchers in the night / And everyone absorbs the warmth she radiates / Shining with abandon, she inspires true delight / Basking in her energy, they let it give them life / Sunny in the shadows / She lights the way, they follow / And when she goes, they know that she’s been there / Like glitter, she leaves sparkles littered everywhere / But where there is a spark, there’s bound to be a flame / And the fire of her anger would roar and rage / It burned the ones around her / It made them back away / Requesting that she learn to keep that part contained / They said that they would come back when it’s safe / They explained: It’s a lot to take / What did they expect? / They call her Goldie / She is a being of light / They call her Goldie / She is a being so bright / The flashes of her laughter are gregarious and loud / Reactions so responsive and inviting / Her smile will electrify the dullness of the crowds / Her sensory intensity’s exciting / Vivid as a flower / A rainbow through a shower / Within her glow, true colors show with pride / And when she eats a treat, the flavor’s magnified / But working in these hues of heightened vibrancy / She knew just how blue blue can be / A bottomless indigo ocean saturating her insides / Careful of the waves, for there is danger in the riptides / Come back when it’s safe / It’s a lot to take / The fury of the heat / The drowning in the deep / Sputtering and singed from the intensity within / How could she wish it onto anybody else? / So men and women, girls and boys, would come to her to seek her joy / And she would see it multiply like meadows overgrown / But she faced her every demon on her own / Being of light / Being so bright / Hold on tight / When the nightmares come / Put up a fight / It’s a righteous one / Being of light / Being so bright / Put up a fight / You are loved
